Overview
The Serengeti National Park is Tanzania’s most famous wildlife destination, renowned for its vast open plains, incredible biodiversity, and the Great Wildebeest Migration, one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles. Covering over 14,750 square kilometers (5,700 square miles), the park is home to an astonishing variety of wildlife, including the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino—as well as cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, and thousands of other species.
The Serengeti is best known for the Great Migration, where over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with zebras and gazelles, travel across the plains in search of fresh grazing, facing dramatic river crossings and predator encounters along the way. This awe-inspiring journey takes place year-round, with key highlights including the Mara River crossings (July–October) and the calving season in the southern Serengeti (January–March).
